Funk Brothers with Snakepit sign

“Studio A” was the offical name of the studio at Motown but to the Funkbrothers it was known as "The SnakePit".

This nickname came about because you had to walk down a few steps to get to it and with all the leads for the various instuments strewn over the floor it looked like a pit of snakes.Open for recording 24 hours a day, seven days a week the Funkbrothers were always "on call" whenever a session required them.

Many people thought this room had special acoustic properties and attributed this to the success of Motown.Whilst some of that maybe true,it was just another instance were the Funkbrothers were overlooked.

The Snakepit was the main studio at Motown in the "Golden Era" from 1959 until 1972,although in 1968 the company moved it’s headquarters to a ten-story building in downtown Detroit, artists continued to record in “Studio A”.
