In 1967 Motowns' hit machine was in full swing and it was into this atmosphere that Bob Babbitt not only took on the pressure of working in the ever busy studio but the even bigger role of filling the shoes of the great James Jamerson who was suffering increasing health problems.
After doing free lance work around Detroit in the mid-'60s, Bob joined Stevie Wonder's road band in 1966 and eventually was brought into the Motown studio in 1967.Bob worked for the next six years at Hitsville and was a favorite of Motown master producer Norman Whitfield.
In 1970 Bob recorded with Marvin Gaye on some of the tracks for his classic "What's Going On" album, including "Mercy,Mercy Me (the ecology)".
After Motown Bob continued his studio career in New York, Philadelphia, and in Nashville. In 1975 he played bass parts on the posthumously released Jimi Hendrix album Midnight Lightning.
Bob now works in Nashville as a studio musician.
